Motown-baas Berry Gordy koos er voor geen foto van de blanke Teena Marie op de hoes te plaatsen. Hij vond haar muziek zeer soulful en wilde dat men haar muziek op de inhoud zou beoordelen.

Schrijvers/producers Gamble & Huff worden geeerd door de stad Philadelpia. Hun "block" in South Broad Street, thuisbasis van hun succesvolle platenlabel Philadelphia, zal officieel worden omgedoopt tot "Gamble & Huff Walk".

The world-renowned pioneering music icons, architects of “The Sound of Philadelphia,” one of the most enduring brands of soul music anywhere, will be honored in ceremonies in front of the infamous Philadelphia International Records building, where they created a massive catalogue of 3,000 songs together, including R&B #1 hits, pop #1 hits, 100 gold and platinum records, Grammy winners and BMI songwriters’ award nominees. The block of South Broad Street where the historic building resides is located along the Avenue of the Arts between Spruce and Pine streets, a strip that also includes the Kimmel Center, the University of the Arts and the recently launched TSOP Experience, a live performance venue and souvenir shop that celebrates the Gamble & Huff legacy by showcasing the music of Philadelphia’s rising and established stars.

Though an arson fire has kept the Philadelphia International Records offices at 309 S. Broad Street quiet since the beginning of the year, the street renaming signifies a whole new beginning for Gamble & Huff, as the duo prepares for a glorious two-year celebration of their legacy, beginning next year with the 40th anniversary of Philadelphia International Records, and continuing into 2012 with the 50th anniversary of their distinguished partnership. The extraordinary festivities along Broad Street will include a free outdoor concert by several recording artists in the extended Philadelphia International Records family. Guest speakers and attendees will include numerous dignitaries, recording artists, business associates and family members.

Soulpionier Solomon Burke is zondagochtend 10 oktober overleden op Schiphol. De zanger was net gearriveerd voor een optreden met De Dijk, waarmee hij onlangs een album opnam. De band laat op haar website weten intens verdrietig te zijn over het onverwachte heengaan van de 70-jarige zanger.

Als het aan Aretha Franklin ligt krijgt actrice Halle Berry de eer de 'Queen Of Soul' te vertolken op het witte doek. De 68-jarige soulzangeres maakte onlangs de namen bekend van de Hollywoodsterren die ze gevraagd heeft voor een film over haar leven en carrière. Franklin ziet het liefst Denzel Washington haar vader vertolken. Terrence Howard zou Smokey Robinson moeten spelen.

Dat beroemdheden hun 'eigen' mode, sieraden of geurtjes op de markt brengen is niet nieuw. Toch is een Joss Stone-schoenenlijn opmerkelijk. De soulzangeres loopt namelijk liefst blootvoets of op slippers. Het initiatief blijkt te liggen bij schoenenmerk Nine West. Creative Director Fred Allard legt uit: "Ze was blootvoets! Dus belde ik haar om te vragen of ze schoenen nodig had".

In november zal een nieuw album verschijnen van Michael Jackson, met maar liefst 10 niet eerder uitgebrachte nummers. Kort na Jackson's dood werd al bekend dat zijn archief meer dan honderd voltooide, unreleased tracks bevatte. Het gaat zowel om oud als nieuw materiaal, waaronder opnames uit Jackson's toptijd, maar ook recentere samenwerkingen met o.a. Ne-Yo en will.i.am.
